We were keen to try SRAM’s new Apex groupset, mostly to try out the new wide-ratio gears but it was also a good excuse to see it mounted on two very different frames.
Condor’s Italian-made frame has pretensions to a sophisticated lifestyle, according to Simon Smythe. Does that make it a bad buy against the Dolan?
“There’s no messing about with the Preffisio — it’s a basic aluminium frame made capably in the Far East to keep costs down, available in any colour so long as it’s black.”
The same SRAM Apex components on two somewhat similar aluminium frames show up how little differences can make a bike perfect for your needs.

Cannondale offer carbon frames for many thousands but their legendary aluminium frame is still the basis of their own ‘workhorse’ model. An ideal match for 105, then?
GT GTR Carbon Sport: “the only bike here using the 105 calipers, and what a difference! Braking is the most positive by a long way, the levers are perfectly weighted.”
BMC Streetfire SSX01: “The finish is impressive. The welds are very smooth and the paint and decals perfectly applied — it looks like a bike that costs twice as much.”
“There’s a clear difference in performance between the bike that uses the complete 105 groupset — hubs and all — and the other two that spec cheaper calipers and chainsets.”
