Meet Ted Wren, age 80. Lives: Dronfield Woodhouse area of Sheffield. Job: former draughtsman and engineer with ICI and Merchant Navy. Glider pilot, bike racer – rode the Tour of Britain in the 1950s.
“That’s me in the middle. With a couple of my cycling friends Pete Cononley (l) and Barry Thompson (r).
I’m originally from Middlesbrough, Teesside. I moved down to the Sheffield area back in 1954. There was a point were I stopped cycling for 20 years but I’ve got back into cycling regularly again.
We meet twice a week but they are different groups. We have a regular Wednesday group meeting and then on a Saturday morning I sometimes go to a cafe near Crich. There’s not much of a group, only three or four of us that go there.
They are my two regular cycling runs and if I miss one of those for any reason I go out and make up for it on my own. So normally I’m out twice a week and do 30-odd miles each run.
There’s often 10 of us here at Rowsley Mill cafe on a Wednesday morning. I heard about the group here a few years ago from Alan Huntington, who was in our club, and I came to meet him here and so it was through him that I got to meet everyone and it’s gone on from there.”
