It just had to be France didn’t it. With the world’s most famous race taking place in Europe’s top cycling destination, this had to be the place to start. Provence has everything you could wish for, great weather, beautiful scenery and for the most part – empty roads. The Luberon is perfect for the scenic views where for those looking for a challenge head up the various ascents up the Giono-esque countryside. For the experienced amongst you there’s Mont Ventoux – the Giant of Provence.
This is one of Europe’s most important cycling areas due to the Tour de France. Thousands flock here every year to see the world’s top riders doing battle with the toughest of terrains. If you think you’ve got the metal to really test yourself it could be time to pay homage to your heroes. The most well known spots are the Alpe d’Huez, the Col Galibier and the Col d’Izoard, but there are some other lesser known alternatives.
There are some big climes in the Italian Alps, but many cycling enthusiasts head to the Dolomites when testing their bodies in the Italian terrain. It’s scenic, will push your skills to the edge and the food is great too.
Picos de Europa, Spain
Sometimes all we want is a clear course. To be alone, with nothing but your two wheels and your thoughts. Whilst there are some very popular options in Spain, such as the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada, this is a truly great destination. It’s quiet, peaceful and tranquil, but still tasking on those steep mountain passes.
You don’t have to head to the continent to enjoy steep climbs on the back of your bike. For the most part the Yorkshire Dales is always extremely quiet – except for sunny weekends and bank holidays, and whist it may not offer the adrenaline fuelled action of the Alps there are the odd steep pitches to give you the workout you’re craving.
If these sound like the perfect options for you, choose from the wide range of road bikes from Evans Cycles and be on your way!
